Synopsis

Set against the vibrant backdrop of turn-of-the-century New York, Helene Wecker's 'The Golem and the Jinni' masterfully blends fantasy and historical fiction. Chava, a Golem crafted from clay and brought to life through Kabbalistic magic, finds herself adrift in America after the death of her master during the voyage from Poland. Unmoored and instinctively drawn to help others, she is taken in by a compassionate rabbi on the Lower East Side. Meanwhile, Ahmad, a Jinni of fire, awakens from centuries of entrapment in an ancient copper flask, released by a Syrian tinsmith in Manhattan. Though in human form, he remains bound by an iron cuff, preventing his true freedom. Chava and Ahmad, beings of earth and fire, intellect and instinct, find an unexpected connection amidst the bustling immigrant communities. Their opposing natures create a unique bond, but when Chava's powerful Golem instincts are unleashed, their friendship is tested. As a darker, more ancient threat emerges, their combined powers and evolving understanding of humanity will be challenged, forcing them to confront their destinies and make a pivotal choice that could alter their very existence.
