Two years after the tumultuous events of "The Amulet of Samarkand," the ambitious young magician Nathaniel, now known by his adopted name John Mandrake, has rapidly ascended the ranks of Britain's magical government in an alternate, daemon-ridden London. His career, however, faces a severe threat when a colossal, seemingly unstoppable golem embarks on a campaign of random destruction across the city, targeting prominent magical figures.
