Synopsis

In the eagerly awaited sequel to "The Golem and the Jinni," Helene Wecker returns to the lives of Chava, a woman of clay, and Ahmad, a creature of fire, navigating the bustling, rapidly changing world of 1900s Manhattan and beyond. Chava, a Golem, is compelled to aid humanity, while Ahmad, a Jinni, yearns for the freedom of the desert, both hiding their true natures amidst human society. Their intertwined destinies deepen, but their opposing forces threaten to pull them apart. Meanwhile, their influence ripples outward: Park Avenue heiress Sophia Winston, afflicted after an encounter with Ahmad, journeys to the Middle East for a cure, meeting the tempestuous Jinni Dima. Back in New York, a young girl named Kreindel helps her rabbi father create Yossele, a Golem who becomes her protector in an orphanage. As the world hurtles towards World War I, these disparate lives converge, forcing Chava and Ahmad to confront their identities, their bond, and the thrilling, dangerous prospect of encountering others like themselves.
