Synopsis

Set in 70 C.E. during the brutal Roman siege of Masada, Alice Hoffman's "The Dovekeepers" vividly reimagines the lives of the women who found refuge in the isolated desert fortress. The story unfolds through the perspectives of four extraordinary women—Yael, Revka, Aziza, and Shirah—each a 'dovekeeper' with a unique past and purpose. Yael, a silent herbalist haunted by childhood trauma; Revka, an elderly baker recounting the horrors of the Jewish revolt; Aziza, a fierce warrior raised as a boy; and Shirah, a mystical woman known for her healing powers, whose independence often draws suspicion. As the Roman legions advance, these women, despite their profound differences, are bound together by the impending doom and their shared experiences of love, loss, and fierce resilience. Hoffman masterfully weaves their individual stories into a powerful tapestry, exploring themes of survival, sacrifice, and the enduring strength of the human spirit amidst historical tragedy.
