In the simmering political climate of 1940 Istanbul, unassuming English armaments engineer Howard Graham finds his life irrevocably altered after a late-night dalliance with a cabaret dancer. Returning to his hotel room, he is confronted by an assailant with a gun, an incident that thrusts him into a terrifying nightmare of espionage and intrigue. Graham soon realizes he is a target, his knowledge of crucial Turkish defense plans making him a liability to opposing forces. To escape, he boards an Italian freighter bound for Genoa, hoping to reach the safety of England.
However, the ship proves to be a crucible of suspicion and danger. Among the eclectic group of passengers are a pair of ruthless Nazi assassins, intent on preventing Graham's safe return, alongside the enigmatic cabaret dancer Josette and her manipulative manager husband, and a spectrum of other characters, some offering potential alliances, others concealing sinister motives. As the journey unfolds, Graham must navigate a treacherous web of deceit, paranoia, and sudden violence, all while grappling with his own mounting fear and the desperate need to survive long enough to deliver his vital information.
