Synopsis

In the desperate days of May 1941, as merchant vessels fall victim to relentless U-boat attacks, the British Royal Navy's Intelligence Division devises a daring counter-operation. Under the guise of a neutral Spanish freighter, the *Santa Rosa*, the Dutch vessel *Noordendam* sails up the Tagus River to Lisbon. Commanded by Captain Eric DeHaan, her true mission is to load clandestine detection equipment bound for a secret operation on the Swedish coast. This "dark voyage" is a perilous undertaking, fraught with danger as the crew navigates the treacherous waters of espionage. Aboard are fugitives from across occupied Europe – a Polish engineer, a Greek stowaway, a Jewish medical officer, a British spy, and others who cannot return home. Their survival is intertwined with the fate of Britain itself, fighting a battle against starvation and the Nazi regime. Alan Furst crafts an authentic and suspenseful tale of courage, sacrifice, and the hidden wars fought in the shadows of World War II.

Critical Reception

"Praised by The New York Times as a masterwork from 'America's preeminent spy novelist,' *Dark Voyage* stands as a brilliant and powerful contribution to historical espionage fiction."
