Epitaph for a Spy

Synopsis

Josef Vadassy, a mild-mannered Hungarian refugee and language tutor, is finally enjoying a much-needed respite on the sun-drenched French Riviera. His tranquility shatters when a routine trip to develop holiday photographs at a local chemist's turns into a nightmare: he's wrongly accused of espionage and mistaken for a Gestapo agent. Arrested by the French police, Vadassy is presented with an impossible ultimatum – prove his innocence by unmasking the real spy hiding among the eclectic guests at his quaint pension, or face dire consequences. With his freedom and precarious livelihood on the line, Vadassy, an amateur in the world of spies, must navigate a labyrinth of suspicion and deceit, where every fellow resident is a potential suspect. From a sinister industrialist to a glamorous, enigmatic couple, he must discern friend from foe and uncover the truth before his temporary peace becomes a permanent prison. Ambler masterfully crafts a tense atmosphere of paranoia and moral ambiguity, thrusting an ordinary man into an extraordinary, life-threatening game of cat and mouse.
