Terence Dean Brooks, better known as Terry Brooks, is an American writer of fantasy fiction. Born in Sterling, Illinois, in 1944, he spent his childhood in the nearby small town of Dixon. He attended Knox College, earning a B.A. in English literature, and then went on to receive a J.D. from Washington and Lee University School of Law. Brooks practiced law for several years before dedicating himself full-time to writing. He is best known for his 'Shannara' series, which began with 'The Sword of Shannara' in 1977. This novel was one of the first fantasy books to appear on the New York Times bestseller list, marking a significant moment for the genre. His work often features quests, magic, and the battle between good and evil, deeply influenced by J.R.R. Tolkien.
