Synopsis

In a near-future dominated by digital technology, 'Synners' plunges into a Los Angeles where data is currency and consciousness can be uploaded, downloaded, and manipulated. The narrative centers around Mark and Gina, former 'Synners' – designers of immersive, reality-bending virtual experiences – whose lives are entangled with the burgeoning neural interfaces that allow users to plug directly into a shared digital space. When a catastrophic software glitch known as the 'synapse melt' threatens to erase minds and corrupt the entire network, the line between the virtual and the real blurs, forcing characters to confront the existential implications of their technologically advanced, yet fragile, world. Pat Cadigan explores themes of identity, humanity, and the relentless march of technological evolution, all set against a backdrop of corporate control, counter-culture rebellion, and the seduction of synthesized realities.

Critical Reception

"As the winner of the 1992 Arthur C. Clarke Award, 'Synners' solidified Pat Cadigan's reputation as the 'Queen of Cyberpunk,' cementing its status as a seminal and influential work within the genre."
