Synopsis

Haunted by the recent murder of his wife, Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley embarks on a solitary, soul-searching trek along Cornwall's unforgiving South-West Coast Path. Forty-three days into his journey, a horrific event shatters his fragile peace: he witnesses a cliff climber fall to his death, an incident seemingly observed by a surfer in a nearby cove. This tragedy quickly intertwines with another mystery when Lynley encounters a young woman whose past is an unsettling blank before her thirteenth year. Reluctantly pulled back into the world of crime, Lynley summons his colleague, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, from London. Together, they are plunged into a complex investigation that unearths deeply buried secrets, old grievances, and the chilling specter of revenge. As they navigate the rugged Cornish landscape and the intricate lives of its inhabitants, Lynley and Havers must sift through layers of deception to uncover the truth behind a death that is anything but accidental, all while Lynley grapples with his own profound loss.
