Synopsis

When thirteen-year-old Matthew Whately vanishes from Bredgar Chambers, an elite public school in West Sussex, aristocratic Inspector Thomas Lynley is called in by an old school friend, the boy's housemaster. Joined by his no-nonsense partner, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, and forensic scientist Simon Allcourt-St. James, Lynley finds himself operating outside his usual jurisdiction. What begins as a search for a missing child soon escalates into a tragic murder investigation. As Lynley and Havers delve into the cloistered world of the boarding school, questioning prefects, teachers, and pupils, they uncover a disturbing undercurrent of secrets and evil. The rigid structure and unspoken rules of this closed society conceal emotional wounds and dark truths, leading the detectives perilously close to their own vulnerabilities. The investigation into Matthew's death forces them to confront a reality far more sinister than they anticipated, and in their pursuit of justice, they risk overlooking the ominous signs of another murder lurking in the shadows.
