Synopsis

In the hallowed, yet deceptively serene, halls of St. Stephen's College, Cambridge, the brutal murder of brilliant and provocative student Elena Weaver sends shockwaves through the academic community. Elena, a young woman who lived life on her own terms, marked by intense emotional and physical relationships and a fierce determination to settle scores, is found bludgeoned to death by the River Cam, her morning run tragically interrupted. Enter Inspector Thomas Lynley, the aristocratic Scotland Yard detective, and his unconventional partner, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers. As they delve into Elena's complex life, they uncover a labyrinthine network of jealousy, ambition, and secret desires. Nearly everyone Elena knew — her estranged mother, her controlling stepfather, a devoted but possessive professor, a volatile ex-lover, and even a jealous housemate — seems to harbour motives and secrets. George masterfully peels back the layers of Cambridge's elite intellectual circles, revealing the dark undercurrents of obsession and betrayal that led to a promising life cut short. Lynley and Havers must navigate this treacherous emotional landscape to unmask the killer hiding within.
