Synopsis

In Elizabeth George's chilling "Payment in Blood," the serene yet stark Scottish Highlands become the backdrop for a brutal murder that shatters the theatrical world. Renowned playwright Joy Sinclair is found dead, an eighteen-inch dirk piercing her neck, just as she was on the cusp of unveiling a scandalous new work. Aristocratic Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley and his steadfast, yet often prickly, partner Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers are called to the isolated estate, facing a jurisdiction that barely recognizes their authority. The investigation quickly devolves into a complex web of deeply entrenched emotions and long-held secrets, as the suspects include Britain's most celebrated actress, a powerful theatrical producer, and even the woman Lynley holds dear. As they navigate the treacherous terrain of human relationships, the detectives must unearth a motive buried in the darkest corners of the past and the unexplored regions of the human heart, where passion and betrayal intertwine with deadly consequences.
