In a future world where everyone is surgically transformed into a beautiful 'pretty' at age sixteen, Tally Youngblood eagerly awaits her turn. She lives in Uglyville, counting down the days until she can join her flawless friends in New Pretty Town. But Tally's plans are disrupted when she befriends Shay, a rebel who doesn't want the operation and plans to escape to a legendary, un-prettified settlement called the Smoke.
