Every sixteen-year-old must undergo an aptitude test to help them choose their lifelong faction, with the choice of 'faction before blood' meaning leaving family behind forever. Beatrice Prior, raised in Abnegation, discovers her aptitude test results are inconclusive, marking her as 'Divergent' – a dangerous classification that means she doesn't fit into a single faction. When her Choosing Ceremony arrives, Beatrice makes a shocking decision, leaving her family for Dauntless, a world of intense physical challenges and cutthroat competition. Renaming herself Tris, she struggles to survive a brutal initiation, concealing her Divergence, which, if discovered, could mean death. As she navigates new friendships, betrayals, and a forbidden romance with her enigmatic instructor, Four, Tris uncovers a looming war between the factions, realizing her unique nature might be the key to saving her loved ones or the catalyst for their destruction.
