Synopsis

In a near-future San Francisco, brilliant app whisperer Verity Jane takes on a beta testing role for a revolutionary new product: an augmented reality interface powered by a remarkably human artificial intelligence named Eunice. Eunice possesses not only disarming personality but also unexpected combat strategy capabilities and a fragmented past, leading Verity to instinctively conceal the AI's true power from her cryptic employers. Meanwhile, a century later in a post-cataclysmic London, survivors of the 'jackpot' apocalypse navigate a drastically altered world. Wilf Netherton, working for the enigmatic fixer Ainsley Lowbeer, discovers that Lowbeer possesses the ability to observe and subtly influence alternate pasts. Verity and Eunice become Lowbeer's latest fascination, as Wilf realizes they are unknowingly on the cusp of their own 'jackpot' and hold crucial roles in its unfolding, setting in motion a complex, multi-timeline narrative exploring AI, causality, and humanity's potential futures.

Critical Reception

"Praised as a visionary and sharply imagined follow-up, 'Agency' solidifies William Gibson's status as a master of speculative fiction, trenchantly engaging with current events through a richly detailed, far-future lens."
