The Only One Left

In 1983, home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at the decaying cliffside mansion, Hope's End, to care for the notorious Lenora Hope. Decades earlier, in 1929, Lenora, then seventeen, was implicated in the brutal murders of her entire family, a crime that shocked the Maine coast and became a local legend. Though never proven guilty, the public largely believes she was responsible. Now in her seventies, and rendered mute by a series of strokes, Lenora communicates solely through an old typewriter. One night, she makes Kit an irresistible offer: she wants to finally tell her side of the story. As Kit transcribes Lenora's chilling account of the events leading up to the massacre, she uncovers a tale far more complex and disturbing than the schoolyard rhymes suggest. But when unsettling details about her predecessor's mysterious departure surface, Kit begins to question Lenora's every word, fearing the seemingly frail woman in her care might be far more dangerous than she ever imagined, and that she too might be trapped in Hope's End with a killer.
