Synopsis

Set against the brutal backdrop of the Sri Lankan civil war in the late 20th century, "Anil's Ghost" follows Anil Tissera, a Sri Lankan-born forensic anthropologist educated in the West, who returns to her war-torn homeland on a mission for an international human rights organization. Her task is to investigate the systematic, organized campaigns of murder engulfing the island, seeking evidence of state-sponsored atrocities. Partnering with a local archaeologist named Sarath, Anil uncovers a skeleton, ominously dubbed "Sailor," that presents a haunting mystery. As they meticulously piece together the identity and story of this victim, they delve deeper into the island's violent past and present, confronting bureaucratic resistance, the pervasive fear of an unseen enemy, and the deeply personal toll of conflict. Ondaatje masterfully weaves together themes of identity, memory, justice, and the enduring power of ancient culture amidst modern barbarity, creating a rich tapestry of a nation grappling with its own ghosts.

Critical Reception

"Praised for its poetic prose, vivid imagery, and unflinching exploration of human suffering and resilience, "Anil's Ghost" stands as a powerful and profoundly moving work by a Booker Prize-winning author."
