Synopsis

Set against the backdrop of Sri Lanka's brutal civil war in 1990, "The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida" introduces Maali Almeida, a war photographer, gambler, and closeted gay man, who awakens to find himself dead. Floating in a celestial visa office, a bureaucratic afterlife, he has 'seven moons'—or one week—to reach out to the living from beyond the veil. His mission: to guide his loved ones and enemies to a hidden cache of photographs that could expose the true horrors and perpetrators of the conflict. As Maali navigates the chaotic afterlife, encountering other spirits and the enigmatic 'In-Between,' he grapples with his past, his loves, and the profound injustice of his country, all while racing against time to reveal the truth and secure his own passage to 'The Light.' The novel is a darkly humorous, poignant, and fiercely satirical exploration of war, identity, and the enduring power of truth.

Critical Reception

"Recipient of the 2022 Booker Prize, this novel has been widely acclaimed for its audacious originality, biting satire, and deeply affecting portrayal of Sri Lanka's tragic past."
