David Farland (born David Wolverton) was an American fantasy and science fiction author, best known for his epic fantasy series *The Runelords*. Born in Spokane, Washington, in 1957, he also wrote under his birth name, David Wolverton, for some science fiction and horror works. Farland was a prolific writer, penning over 50 novels and numerous short stories. Beyond his literary output, he was a highly respected writing instructor, having taught at Brigham Young University and mentored countless aspiring authors through his "My Story Valley" workshops and as a lead judge for the Writers of the Future Contest. His teaching emphasized story structure and emotional resonance, influencing a generation of fantasy writers. He passed away in 2022.
