Carlos Ruiz Zafón (1964-2020) was a Spanish novelist known for his intricate, atmospheric, and often gothic works. Born in Barcelona, he initially worked in advertising before publishing his first novel, the young adult fantasy 'El Príncipe de la Niebla' (The Prince of Mist), in 1993. He moved to Los Angeles in 1994, where he continued to write and also worked as a screenwriter. Zafón rose to international prominence with his 2001 novel 'La Sombra del Viento' (The Shadow of the Wind), the first book in the 'Cemetery of Forgotten Books' quartet. This series, set in a mysterious, post-Spanish Civil War Barcelona, garnered critical acclaim and sold millions of copies worldwide, establishing him as one of Spain's most successful contemporary authors. He passed away in 2020 due to cancer.
