Erich Maria Remarque

Osnabrück, Germany
Born 1898 — Died 1970

Biography

Erich Maria Remarque, born Erich Paul Remark in Osnabrück, Germany, was a celebrated German novelist. He is best known for his anti-war novel "All Quiet on the Western Front" (Im Westen nichts Neues), which vividly describes the horrors of war from the perspective of a young German soldier. Remarque himself was conscripted into the German army during World War I, where he was wounded multiple times, and these experiences profoundly shaped his literary work. His novels often explore themes of disillusionment, the psychological trauma of war, and the search for meaning in a post-conflict world. Due to his pacifist views and critical portrayal of war, his books were banned and publicly burned by the Nazis. He eventually emigrated from Germany, living in Switzerland and later the United States, becoming a naturalized American citizen.

Selected Thoughts

«I am young, I am twenty years old; yet I know nothing of life but despair, death, fear, and the supremely superficiality of putting us in front of this most deadly of all games.»

«To the man who has to make his living by his pen, solitude is a necessity.»

«A man can be an idealist only as long as he has his teeth in good condition.»

Writing Style

Remarque's writing style is characterized by its stark realism, directness, and emotional intensity. He employs simple, unadorned prose to convey the brutal realities of war and its psychological impact, often focusing on the internal struggles and camaraderie of soldiers. His narratives are poignant, deeply human, and deliberately avoid glorifying conflict, emphasizing instead the universal suffering and loss of innocence caused by war. He masterfully uses dialogue and internal monologue to reveal character depth and the existential despair of his protagonists.
