Synopsis

In Jeffery Deaver's "The Empty Chair," forensic criminalist Lincoln Rhyme, a quadriplegic seeking experimental surgery in North Carolina, finds his recovery plans interrupted by a chilling local crime. Alongside his protégé, Amelia Sachs, Rhyme is thrust into the hunt for a teenage truant dubbed the "Insect Boy," the prime suspect in a murder and the abduction of two young women in the sleepy town of Tanner's Corner. Rhyme's unparalleled analytical prowess quickly identifies a culprit, but the case takes an unexpected turn when Sachs, defying her mentor's conclusions, believes the accused is innocent. Her conviction leads her into the treacherous swampland, inadvertently harboring the very suspect Rhyme deems a ruthless killer. This forces Rhyme into his greatest challenge yet: a battle of wits, forensic acumen, and intuition against the brilliant detective he himself trained. As the stakes escalate, the lines between right and wrong blur, pushing both Rhyme and Sachs to their limits in a race against time to uncover the truth.
