Synopsis

Jackie Burke, a wily flight attendant with a significant side hustle, finds her carefully constructed double life collapsing when federal agents intercept her latest run, smuggling illegal cash from the Caribbean to Florida for the notorious arms dealer Ordell Robbie. Caught in a vise, Jackie is given an impossible choice: cooperate with the Feds and betray Ordell, or face a lengthy prison sentence. However, turning informant against the increasingly paranoid and lethal Ordell is a death sentence in itself. Into this perilous equation steps Max Cherry, a disillusioned bail bondsman who, against his better judgment, becomes entangled with Jackie. Recognizing her street smarts and his own weariness with the system, Max finds himself drawn to her audacious plan to play both sides, escape the entanglement, and walk away with a fortune. Elmore Leonard's "Rum Punch" is a masterclass in hardboiled crime, a high-stakes game of manipulation, loyalty, and survival, populated by a cast of unforgettable, morally ambiguous characters. As Jackie expertly navigates a treacherous landscape of double-crosses and unexpected alliances, the novel delivers a potent mix of sharp dialogue, suspense, and the signature grit for which Leonard is renowned. The question remains: whose rum will ultimately pack the hardest punch?
