Synopsis

Miles Despard's seemingly straightforward death by poison plunges his suburban world into a chilling abyss of the impossible. What begins as a routine investigation quickly unravels into a tapestry woven with ancient curses, spectral sightings, and baffling paradoxes. A housekeeper witnesses a phantom woman walk through a solid wall, and an ancient, bricked-up door appears to have been breached by someone from the past. Is Despard a victim of a very human murderer employing ingenious trickery, or has a centuries-old curse, tied to the infamous witches of the burning court, reawakened to claim new victims? As the line between rational explanation and supernatural horror blurs, the protagonist, solicitor Edward Stevens, finds himself entangled in a web of historical secrets and present-day terror, where the dead may not stay buried and the impossible becomes terrifyingly real. John Dickson Carr masterfully blends detective fiction with gothic suspense, challenging logic at every turn.
