Synopsis

On the cusp of a new beginning, divorcee Eve Neill finds herself entangled in a web of passion, betrayal, and murder when her estranged first husband, Ned, dramatically re-enters her life. Engaged to the respectable banker Toby Lawes, Eve's hopes for a serene future are shattered by Ned's obsessive return, determined to reclaim her at any cost. This escalating emotional turmoil culminates in a shocking discovery: a dead body, accompanied by the shattered remnants of an antique snuff-box once owned by Napoleon. These fragments hold the key to two conflicting narratives – one designed to deceive, the other exposing a brutal truth. As suspicion mounts and Eve's freedom hangs in the balance, she must place her trust in the unyielding logic of a criminology expert. Only through a meticulous examination of the evidence can the true killer be unmasked, determining whether Eve's destiny lies in a bridal gown or a hangman's cloak.

Critical Reception

"The New York Times Book Review hailed this work as 'one of the most ingeniously constructed mystery stories John Dickson Carr has ever told,' cementing its status as a masterclass in Golden Age detective fiction."
