Synopsis

Following the hard-won victory against the tyrannical Deryni king, Imre, the realm of Gwynedd finds itself in a fragile state of peace, largely due to the extraordinary efforts of the powerful Deryni magic-user, Camber of Culdi. A human, Cinhil, now reluctantly occupies the throne, yet the kingdom's stability is far from assured. Lingering Deryni loyalists plot on the borders, and the new king, Cinhil, resents his crown and, more acutely, the magical abilities of all Deryni, especially Camber. As ancient prophecies loom and a burgeoning anti-Deryni sentiment threatens to unravel everything he fought for, Camber is faced with an impossible choice. To secure a lasting peace and safeguard the future of Gwynedd, he must embark on a path of ultimate self-sacrifice, fading from history and, indeed, from existence itself. This pivotal tale delves into the moral complexities of power, prejudice, and the profound cost of leadership, as a hero must orchestrate his own downfall for the greater good.

Critical Reception

"As a cornerstone of the Deryni Chronicles, 'Saint Camber' is widely acclaimed for its intricate political machinations, deep character exploration, and pioneering role in the subgenre of historical fantasy."
