Synopsis

In the tumultuous alternate Middle Ages of Gwynedd, "The Harrowing of Gwynedd" plunges readers into a desperate era for the Deryni, a magical race facing systematic annihilation. Following the untimely deaths of King Cinhil and the Deryni's steadfast ally, Camber of Culdi, the kingdom is seized by a reign of genocidal terror. Radical religious zealots and power-hungry regents, exploiting the weakness of young King Alroy, relentlessly hunt and despise the Deryni. Even Alroy's twin, Prince Javan Haldane, recognizes the perfidy but is powerless to halt the rising tide of hatred. Adding to the profound crisis, Camber of Culdi's body remains miraculously uncorrupted weeks after his death, hinting that his soul is trapped in an ethereal limbo. His surviving children confront the grim realization that only the ultimate sacrifice can free their father's spirit. Katherine Kurtz masterfully weaves a tale of intolerance, faith, and courage, exploring the dark depths of prejudice and the enduring power of magic and loyalty in a kingdom teetering on the brink of collapse.
