In the quiet, idyllic town of Haven, Maine, writer Roberta 'Bobbi' Anderson stumbles upon a massive, metallic object buried deep in the forest. As she and her on-again, off-again lover, Jim Gardener, begin to excavate it, the artifact reveals itself to be an alien spaceship, slowly emanating an insidious, mind-altering influence. This mysterious power enhances the townspeople's intelligence, granting them incredible, often dangerous, technological abilities, but at a terrible cost: it erodes their humanity, empathy, and sanity, transforming them into increasingly grotesque and alien beings driven by the ship's will. Jim Gardener, due to a metal plate in his head from an old accident, finds himself uniquely resistant to the ship's direct psychic pull, becoming a lone, desperate observer of Haven's terrifying transformation. He must fight against the escalating horror as the ship fully awakens, threatening to extend its influence beyond Haven and consume the world, forcing him into a perilous battle to save not just himself, but perhaps humanity, from an ancient, malevolent alien force and the twisted remnants of his former friends and lover.
Critical Reception
"Often cited as one of King's more polarizing and sprawling works, 'The Tommyknockers' remains a significant example of his exploration of small-town horror and insidious alien influence, despite its mixed critical legacy."
