Synopsis

In John Banville's 'Shroud,' the enigmatic intellectual Axel Vander, an elderly academic of considerable renown, finds his meticulously constructed identity threatened when a mysterious letter arrives, promising to expose his long-held secrets. Haunted by a past he has painstakingly concealed, Vander travels to Turin to confront the letter's author, the equally unreliable Cass Cleave. As age and alcohol blur the lines between fact and fiction for Vander, he finds himself drawn into a disorienting dance with Cass, whose own grasp on reality is tenuous. Their collision creates a darkly compelling and deeply disturbed relationship, fraught with the potential for disaster. As they both grapple with fractured memories and the elusive nature of truth, the novel delves into the profound complexities of identity, memory, and the stories we tell ourselves to survive, leading to a suspenseful unravelling of dark secrets.

Critical Reception

"Praised for its wit, moral complexity, and compassion, 'Shroud' stands as a profound achievement in contemporary literary fiction, challenging the boundaries of the novel's capacity."
