Synopsis

The hallowed grounds of Sudeley Hall, a prestigious public school, are shattered by murder during its annual Sports Day. The victim, the widely detested nephew of the headmaster, is discovered strangled in a haystack, leaving a trail of potential suspects among both students and staff who harbored animosity towards him. English master Michael Evans, already under scrutiny after being seen in a compromising position with the headmaster's alluring young wife, quickly becomes the prime suspect. With suspicion mounting against his friend, the erudite and charming amateur detective Nigel Strangeways, nephew to Scotland Yard's Assistant Commissioner, steps in. As Strangeways delves into the cloistered world of Sudeley Hall, he uncovers a web of secrets, resentments, and hidden desires, forcing him to navigate the complex dynamics of a seemingly idyllic institution to unmask a killer who could be anyone from a disgruntled student to a jaded colleague. This inaugural adventure for Nigel Strangeways promises a classic Golden Age whodunit brimming with wit, intelligent deduction, and atmospheric tension.
