The Promise

Synopsis

In Robert Crais's gripping thriller, "The Promise," the unwavering loyalty of private investigators Elvis Cole and Joe Pike is tested when seemingly disparate cases converge into a deadly international conspiracy. Elvis is hired to locate Krista Morales, a woman who vanished after meeting someone online, only to uncover she was working for a defense contractor and being blackmailed to supply explosive components. Meanwhile, LAPD officer Scott James and his loyal K9 partner, Maggie, stumble upon a far more dangerous situation than an armed thief during a routine call, finding themselves targeted by a powerful, unseen enemy. As their respective investigations deepen, Elvis and Joe's search for Krista intertwines with Scott and Maggie's fight for survival. They discover connections to inner-city drug traffickers and a shadowy group of Afghan war veterans with ties to a terrorist cell, escalating the stakes. The four must join forces to find Krista before she is silenced permanently, while simultaneously battling to prevent their own demise at the hands of a ruthless and determined foe.

Critical Reception

"Praised by the Washington Post for its suspense, surprises, and compelling characters, "The Promise" firmly establishes Robert Crais among the pantheon of thriller giants like James Lee Burke and Stephen King."
