Synopsis

In Lawrence Block's gritty and atmospheric novel, "Eight Million Ways to Die," we are plunged into the desolate world of ex-cop and private investigator Matt Scudder. Haunted by past mistakes and battling a burgeoning alcoholism, Scudder is hired by Chance, a charismatic pimp, to investigate the brutal murder of a young prostitute named Kim Dakin. What initially appears to be a straightforward case of revenge or a deal gone wrong quickly unravels into a labyrinth of moral ambiguity, desperate lives, and the pervasive corruption that permeates New York City's underbelly. As Scudder delves deeper, he confronts not only the city's myriad vices but also his own inner demons. The investigation becomes a journey of self-discovery and a grim exploration of the choices people make to survive, highlighting the tragic reality that in a city with eight million inhabitants, there are just as many ways to meet one's end, and often, little justice to be found.
