Synopsis

Mariana Andros, a brilliant but troubled group therapist, is drawn into a chilling murder investigation at Cambridge University after her niece's friend, a member of the elite secret society known as 'The Maidens,' is found dead. Despite the handsome and charismatic Greek tragedy professor Edward Fosca being adored by staff and students, Mariana becomes convinced he is the killer. Fosca, who often references the rites of Persephone, seems untouchable, with a seemingly perfect alibi. As Mariana, a former student herself, delves deeper into the idyllic yet sinister world of ancient traditions and towering spires, her obsession with proving Fosca's guilt intensifies. When another body is discovered, her relentless pursuit threatens to unravel her credibility and personal relationships, pushing her to the brink in a desperate quest for justice, even if it means risking her own life to expose a murderer hidden in plain sight.

Critical Reception

"This instant New York Times bestseller has been lauded as a 'deliciously dark, elegant, utterly compulsive read' that solidifies Alex Michaelides's standing as a major force in psychological suspense."
