He pursued his education at Cambridge University, studying English Literature, and later at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles, where he specialized in screenwriting. Before achieving international acclaim as a novelist, Michaelides worked as a psychotherapist for two years at a secure unit for young adults, an experience that profoundly influenced his later literary work. He also had a successful career as a screenwriter, with credits including the films "The Devil You Know" and "The Con Is On" (also known as "British Families Are Murder"). His debut novel, "The Silent Patient" (2019), became an instant New York Times bestseller and a global phenomenon, selling millions of copies and earning critical praise for its intricate plot and shocking twist.
