Synopsis

In the tumultuous summer of 1545, England teeters on the brink of war as a massive French armada bears down on its shores, and King Henry VIII's extravagant military spending plunges the nation into economic despair. Amidst this national crisis, the astute but troubled lawyer Matthew Shardlake is called upon by an old servant of Queen Catherine Parr. His new mission: to investigate deeply disturbing claims of 'monstrous' wrongs inflicted upon a young ward of the court. As the threat of invasion looms large, Shardlake's inquiries lead him through a labyrinth of secrets and deceptions, forcing him to confront not only the dark underbelly of the Tudor court but also to reunite with figures from his past—both trusted allies and dangerous adversaries close to the throne. 'Heartstone' masterfully weaves a gripping personal investigation into a backdrop of historical upheaval, presenting Shardlake with his most perilous and morally complex case yet, as the fate of England hangs in the balance.
