Synopsis

Set amidst the turbulent backdrop of Tudor England in 1549, "Tombland" plunges readers into a kingdom grappling with the instability left by Henry VIII's death. With the young Edward VI on the throne and his uncle, Edward Seymour, as Protector, England is swept by radical religious reforms, crippling hyperinflation, and burgeoning peasant unrest. Lawyer Matthew Shardlake, now in the service of Lady Elizabeth, is drawn into a web of conspiracy when the gruesome murder of one of her distant relations is rumored to be politically motivated. His investigation takes him to Elizabeth's summer estate, where a second, equally disturbing murder occurs. As Kett's Rebellion explodes across Norfolk, engulfing the countryside in violence and class warfare, Shardlake's loyalties are severely tested. With his companion Nicholas imprisoned, Shardlake must navigate a treacherous landscape of political intrigue, religious fervor, and societal collapse to uncover the truth and decide where his true allegiance lies.
