Synopsis

In the turbulent year of 1543, as King Henry VIII's courtship of Catherine Parr dominates courtly gossip, Matthew Shardlake, a lawyer with a keen sense of justice, finds himself embroiled in a case far removed from the royal machinations. He is tasked with defending a fervent teenage religious extremist, confined within the grim walls of Bedlam, London's notorious hospital for the insane. This seemingly isolated assignment takes a dark turn when an old friend, a fellow reformer, is brutally murdered. Shardlake's investigation into this new crime inexorably leads him back to Bedlam's unsettling confines and, surprisingly, into the orbit of the sophisticated Lady Catherine Parr, who holds secrets and political influence. As Shardlake delves deeper, he uncovers a sinister plot woven around apocalyptic prophecies from the Book of Revelation, threatening to unravel not just the lives of those he seeks to protect, but the very stability of Tudor England itself. With danger lurking in every shadow and faith clashing with fanaticism, Shardlake must navigate a treacherous landscape of religious zealotry, political intrigue, and personal betrayal to uncover the truth before more lives are lost.
