Synopsis

In the third and concluding volume of Mercedes Lackey's seminal 'The Last Herald-Mage' trilogy, "Magic's Promise" plunges the tormented Herald-Mage Vanyel into his most harrowing challenge yet. Weary and emotionally scarred from years of ceaseless battle against dark magic and impending war, Vanyel finds his desperate need for respite brutally denied when his Companion, Yfandes, senses an urgent magical summons. The plea originates from a neighboring kingdom, signaling a catastrophic magical holocaust. Upon arrival, Vanyel and Yfandes are confronted with devastation on an unprecedented scale, forcing them to unravel a tragic mystery amidst the ruins. Their investigation centers on young Prince Tashir, a newly Chosen Herald seemingly incapable of controlling his raw, destructive magic. Is Tashir the unwitting cause of the disaster, or merely a pawn in a far more sinister game orchestrated by a master of dark powers? Vanyel, stretched to the limits of his prodigious strength, must uncover the truth and confront this ultimate evil before it can strike again, risking his own sanity and life to save both kingdoms.
