Synopsis

John Wyndham's seminal post-apocalyptic novel, "The Day of the Triffids," plunges humanity into an unparalleled catastrophe. What initially appears as a breathtaking meteor shower transforms into a blinding green inferno, robbing the vast majority of the global population of their sight. In the wake of this sudden darkness, a more insidious threat emerges: the triffids. These peculiar, venomous plants, once cultivated for their oil and admired as curiosities, suddenly gain mobility, intelligence, and a predatory instinct. They uproot themselves and begin to hunt, their stinging whips delivering fatal toxins to their helpless victims. William Masen, an ophthalmologist's assistant who miraculously retains his sight, awakens in a world of chaos and despair. Navigating the desolate, dangerous streets of London, he encounters other sighted and unsighted survivors, each grappling with the collapse of civilization. As society crumbles and factions emerge, Masen is forced to make impossible choices, battling not only the relentless triffids but also the desperate and often brutal instincts of his fellow humans. The novel explores profound themes of survival, societal breakdown, and the moral dilemmas faced when humanity stands on the brink of extinction, solidifying its status as a foundational work of speculative fiction.
