Synopsis

In a chilling prescient narrative, John Christopher's 'The Death of Grass' plunges humanity into an unprecedented crisis when a virulent plague begins systematically wiping out all forms of grass and cereal crops worldwide. Initially, the distant famine in Asia is dismissed by Europe, but soon the devastating disease breaches its borders, leading to the rapid collapse of civilization. John Custance, a seemingly ordinary family man, finds his life irrevocably altered as society descends into barbarism, resources dwindle, and the rule of law disintegrates. He and his family embark on a perilous cross-country journey through a ravaged Britain, desperately seeking refuge at his brother's isolated farm in a hidden valley. Their odyssey becomes a brutal test of endurance, morality, and the very essence of their humanity, forcing them to confront the terrible sacrifices required to survive in a world stripped bare. This powerful novel explores the psychological toll of catastrophe and the thin veneer of civilization.

Critical Reception

"Heralded as 'one of the greatest post-apocalyptic novels ever written,' this book profoundly influenced the genre with its unflinching exploration of human nature under extreme duress."
