In a post-apocalyptic future, Earth's ravaged landscapes are dominated by colossal mobile metropolises known as Traction Cities, which traverse the Great Hunting Ground (formerly Europe) in a relentless struggle for resources, consuming smaller towns in a practice dubbed Municipal Darwinism. London, a mighty Traction City, embodies this brutal philosophy. Young Tom Natsworthy, an apprentice in the Guild of Historians, leads a sheltered life until he inadvertently saves his hero, Head Historian Thaddeus Valentine, from a murder attempt by the mysterious and vengeful Hester Shaw.
