Synopsis

In the seemingly idyllic and crime-free Quebec village of Three Pines, the tranquility of Thanksgiving Weekend is shattered by the discovery of elderly artist Jane Neal's body in the woods, an arrow piercing her heart. Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec is called to investigate, arriving in a community so peaceful it doesn't even have its own police force. As Gamache, an intuitive and compassionate detective, delves into the lives of Three Pines' eccentric residents, he finds himself confronting a complex web of secrets, resentments, and hidden desires lurking beneath the village's picturesque façade. What initially appears to be a hunting accident quickly unravels into a deliberate murder, forcing Gamache to peel back layers of deception and expose the darkness that can fester even in the most beautiful places. This compelling debut introduces readers to a beloved detective and a captivating world where human nature, in all its complexity, takes center stage.
