Synopsis

In Mark Billingham's groundbreaking debut, "Sleepyhead," Detective Inspector Tom Thorne is thrust into a case that defies conventional understanding and plunges him into a chilling psychological labyrinth. Alison Willetts, a victim of a targeted attack, survives a deliberately induced stroke, leaving her with 'locked-in syndrome' – fully conscious but utterly unable to move or communicate. Initially, the police view this as a crucial mistake by the killer, an opportunity for Alison to identify her attacker. However, Thorne uncovers a horrifying truth: Alison isn't the mistake; she's a twisted masterpiece, the sole survivor in a pattern of three other women who are already dead. Thorne realizes he is hunting a killer whose motive transcends simple violence, an individual with a disturbingly unique agenda that challenges the very foundations of criminal psychology. With Alison holding the unspoken key to the killer's identity, and time rapidly running out, Thorne must navigate the darkest corners of the human mind to prevent further atrocities and unravel the sinister purpose behind these meticulously orchestrated attacks.
