Synopsis

In Mark Billingham's 'Lazybones', the fragile veneer of justice is shattered when Douglas Remfry, recently released after serving seven years for rape, is found brutally murdered. Naked, hooded, and bound in a squalid London hotel room, his death signals a chilling form of retribution. DI Tom Thorne, a detective known for his unconventional methods and deeply empathetic nature, is assigned the case. As Thorne delves into the investigation, a disturbing pattern emerges: a second sex offender is found dead, executed with the same meticulous, vengeful precision. Thorne soon realizes he is hunting a calculating vigilante, a figure determined to mete out their own brand of justice for crimes the legal system has, in their eyes, failed to adequately punish. The hunt for this ruthless killer forces Thorne to confront the complexities of justice, vengeance, and the dark corners of human morality, all while navigating the fraught emotions of victims' families and a public divided on the vigilante's actions. Billingham masterfully crafts a tense, morally ambiguous thriller where the lines between right and wrong blur, pushing Thorne to his limits.

Critical Reception

"Winner of the Crime Novel of the Year, 'Lazybones' is celebrated as a 'ground-breaking' and 'unputdownable' psychological thriller that firmly established Mark Billingham as a master of the genre."
