Synopsis

Miriam Blaylock, an ancient and eternally youthful vampire, is tormented by a curse: everyone she loves eventually withers and dies. As her current beloved, John, shows the unmistakable signs of his impending demise, Miriam is compelled once again to seek a new companion – one who might potentially withstand the test of time and quench her profound thirst for both blood and affection. Her gaze falls upon the brilliant gerontologist, Dr. Sarah Roberts, whose pioneering research into extending life offers a glimmer of hope, or at least a tantalizing prospect for an enduring bond. However, Sarah is entangled with Dr. Tom Haver, who soon finds himself caught in a dangerous triangle where the lines between passion, obsession, and survival blur. Strieber masterfully weaves a chilling narrative that explores the profound loneliness of immortality, the predatory nature of desire, and the tragic irony that for Miriam, true love is always inextricably linked with death.
