Synopsis

Nestled in a secluded Styrian castle, the idyllic life of young Laura is disrupted by a series of unsettling events. After a mysterious carriage accident brings the beautiful, enigmatic Carmilla into her home, Laura finds herself captivated by the new arrival. A strange, intense intimacy develops between them, blurring the lines of friendship and obsession, yet simultaneously Laura is plagued by terrifying nightmares involving a cat-like creature and a feeling of draining vitality. As a mysterious wasting sickness afflicts young women in the surrounding villages, and Carmilla's own bizarre habits – sleeping through the day, aversion to religious symbols, and an unnerving nocturnal wanderlust – become more pronounced, Laura's father and a local general begin to suspect a supernatural cause. Le Fanu masterfully builds an atmosphere of gothic dread, psychological ambiguity, and sensual horror, slowly revealing Carmilla's true, ancient nature as a vampiric predator. The narrative culminates in a chilling confrontation, exposing the dark forces preying upon innocence and the enduring power of ancient evil.
