Synopsis

Tribune Marcus Scaurus, a Roman officer inexplicably transported to the exotic and ancient world of Videssos, finds himself embroiled in a perilous web of imperial intrigue and forbidden desire. While his legion is far away, Marcus seeks solace in a clandestine affair with Alypia, the Emperor Thorisin Gavras's own niece. When their secret trysts are inevitably discovered, the Emperor, caught between familial duty and political necessity, condemns Marcus as a traitor. Yet, a path to redemption is offered: reclaim a rebellious province from a fanatical usurper, but with no official military aid. Accompanied only by the steadfast centurion Gaius Philippus, Marcus embarks on this seemingly impossible mission. However, fate conspires against them, driving them ever westward into the treacherous heart of Videssos's ancient enemy, Yezd, and towards the sinister torture chambers of the deathless wizard-prince Avshar. Unbeknownst to Marcus, the bonds of loyalty among his men prove stronger than any imperial decree, as the legion, without orders, begins its unauthorized march to rescue their tribune, setting the stage for an epic clash that will determine their destinies and the fate of Videssos itself.
