Returning in triumph from a victorious campaign against rebel mercenaries, Marcus is brutally betrayed by one closest to him. Seized and subjected to a truth drug, he faces accusations of treason before the Emperor himself. His only staunch defender in court is the Emperor's spirited niece, Alypia Gavra, whose public support puts both their lives at risk. Consorting with the imperial kin is a perilous dance, threatening exile or even death. Yet, in the face of grave danger, Marcus finds himself drawn to the beautiful Alypia, stirring a dangerous romance amidst the political turmoil and threat of execution.
