Synopsis

On the staggeringly dense, disc-shaped planet Mesklin, gravity ranges from a crushing 700 Earth gravities at its poles to a mere 3 at its equator, a world where oceans are liquid methane and snows are frozen ammonia. This bewildering environment, too hostile for human presence, becomes the stage for an extraordinary first contact. When an unmanned Earth probe crashes near Mesklin's pole, humans realize only the planet's native inhabitants, the small, caterpillar-like Mesklinites, can retrieve its invaluable data. Enter Barlennan, the resourceful and pragmatic captain of the Mesklinite ship, the Bree. Tasked with an impossible journey across his alien world, Barlennan and his crew must navigate unimaginable gravitational shifts, treacherous landscapes, and extreme conditions, all while grappling with the implications of collaborating with the vastly different 'soft ones' from Earth. Their perilous mission promises not only immense rewards for humanity but also unprecedented advancement and understanding for the Mesklinites, forging a bond across species in the face of incredible odds.
